You've got to hear this teasing mix of blues, jazz, folk, and swing from vocalist songwriter Becky Palmer. North Florida has long been familiar with Palmer's honeysuckle melodies and swinging blues vocals. The Gainesville Sun called her a "Florida Treasure".
Her career includes hundreds of performances throughout the southeast. She has been featured at the Florida Folk, Gamble Rogers and W.C. Handy festivals. She also appears regularly on WMNF 88.5 FM out of Tampa.
Ashes celebrates Palmer's maturity and versatility as a vocalist and songwriter. The songs shift moods from the sparse and haunting "Emily" to the low down blues sound of "Shake, Shiver and Shout" to the laid back funk of "Let's Go Dancin'." Her lyrics reveal a slice of life and an earthy blues sense of humor.
Palmer's distinctive vocal style blends jazz, blues, gospel and folk influences. She began singing in church as soon as she could talk and was performing in coffee houses by the age of 13. Ella Fitzergald, Carmen McRae, Nina Simone, and Emmy Lou Harris are among Palmer's musical inspirations. In her, these ingredients have been blended to produce a voice rich with soul and beauty.
